The first photograph taken at Glenrowan during the siege - on the morning of 28 June. Ned Kelly has been captured after his Last Stand, a couple of hours earlier. The last 25 civilian hostages have probably just been released. At left, the white weatherboard Glenrowan Inn is deceptively peaceful. The dining room door at right is open, the bar room door to its left is blocked by a table moved onto the verandah the previous night. Behind this door, the corpse of Joe Byrne lies beside the bar, killed by a bullet four or five hours earlier. In a back room, the last two members of the Gang, Dan Kelly and Steve Hart, have refused to surrender. The only other inhabitant of the hotel is mortally wounded platelayer, Martin Cherry, struck by a police bullet during the night gun battle. He lies in the bark-and-slab kitchen behind the main building. At right are some of the platelayers' tents used by a group of labourers made prisioner by the Gang. At extreme right, one of the besieging police takes cover behind a tree. Some minor damage to the left edge, otherwise an unusually fine print of this important photograph.
