DANIEL (DAN) KELLY, photographed by James Bray of Beechworth (?), copy or print by J.P. Carolin of Kyneton, inscribed on back, "Dan Kelly". Badly worn and creased.
This worn print of the comparatively well-known seated portrait of Dan Kelly poses an intriguing mystery. The mount identifies the photographer as J.P. Carolin of Kyneton. This could mean that Carolin had re-copied the widely-sold Burman copy of an original portrait believed to have been taken by James Bray of Beechworth. Or it could suggest that the original was in fact by Carolin. Condition of the print makes it impossible to judge whether it is struck from an original negative or copied from another print. However it is significant that this image does not show Dan's hair receding sharply to the parting as it does in the Burman copies. The hairline far more closely resembles an 1878 Australian Illustrated News engraving based on the original photo (reproduced McMenomy, revised edition, p. 73).
The only known link between the Kellys and Kyneton was provided by Ned Kelly's time there in 1870 while on remand as an accomplice of bushranger Harry Power. While staying at a Kyneton hotel after his release, he used the name "Dan Kelly".
