JACK HOBBS ceramic, porcelain water jug, transfer-printed colour full-length portrait of Hobbs walking out to bat, within a gilt wreath, opposing panel with a transfer printed vignette of a pair of bats leaning against stumps, within a shield and wreath, green trim, 17 cm. height, circa 1930
Jack Hobbs was 47 on the last occasion he faced Australia in England in 1930. In the first Test at Trent Bridge he opened, scoring 78 and 74 to give England victory by 93 runs. However, thanks mainly to Bradman's prolific run-scoring, Australia won the series 2-1. Hobbs died soon after in 1934, when the jug was probably produced in commemoration. He received 3 benefits from Surrey, of which he was an honorary life member. He was also an honorary member of MCC and was knighted for his services to cricket in 1953
