Bradman's debut as Australian Test captain began disastrously with England winning the first two Tests. However Australia won th ethird Test and then levelled the series at the Adelaide Test, where this bat was probably signed. The Adelaide Test also witnessed a Bradman double century and the Test debut of the 20 year old Ross Gregory. In the decisive fifth Test in Melbourne, Gregory's elegant 80 overshadowed even the centuries scored by Bradman, McCabe and Badcock, winning the series for Australia
