THE UNIQUE SUITE OF HERBIE MATTHEWS'S BROWNLOW MEDALS
Herbie Matthews reached the peak of his career in 1940, when he tied with Des Fothergill of Collingwood for the Brownlow Medal on 32 votes. A countback could not separate them as they had identical vote patterns and had even played an equal number of games. Faced with an unforeseen dilemma the League decided to withold the single medal struck for 1940 and awarded specially produced medals to each player. The original single 1940 medal was retained by the VFL and displayed for many years at their headquaters in Spring street, Melbourne. It was only in 1989, when a number of retrospective medals were awarded to players who had 'lost' on countbacks that Matthews and Fothergill were finally presented with official Brownlow Medals. Each now had two extremely rare medals for the 1940 win.
