Michael Ahmatt was recruited from Darwin by South Adelaide which became highly successful and all but unbeatable in the 1960's. He was selected for Australia at the Tokyo Olympics, and the team stunned the world by finishing second in the Yokohama qualifying tournment. Australia first reached international rankings at these games, where it finished ninth, winning four and losing five. The defeats included a 78-45 loss to subsequent gold medallists, the USA and a 67-57 outmanoeuvring by bronze medallists Brazil. The Australian team included Lindsay Gaze. Ahmatt was the first aborigine to represent Australia in Basketball at the Olympics
