Lot Essay

The unusual swelled case can also be found on a clock with works signed by [John] Cragg, Southampton from the collection at Lamport Hall, Northamptonshire as illustrated in P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, eds., The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, 1924, vol.II, p.123, fig.62. Another of this form by Cragg is illustrated in T. Robinson, The Longcase Clock, Woodbridge, 1981, p.404, fig.11/32. This clock predates the Cragg clocks which were undoubtedly influenced by a pattern for a clockcase in Thomas Sheraton's Drawing Book, 1793, pl.29.
