This is a very archaic South Caucasian rug. The field is a very well spaced version of the field design associated with the village of Saliani, but using a great variety of colours. The border here however is most unusual; it is a border normally found on seventeenth century and early eighteenth century North West Persian carpets, such as one sold in these Rooms 15 October 1998, lot 301.
