Lot Essay

This rug is knotted with the arabic numerals 202 in the apex of the mihrab. This appears to be the signature of a particular workshop in Tabriz who specialised in silk rugs. They wove using a silk weft in contrast to the more frequently encountered cotton. Other examples by the same workshop have been sold in these Rooms 15 October 1998, lots 314 and 315, 22 April 1999, lot 205, and 3 May 2001, lots 9 and 147).
