FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF "THE RAREST VOLUME(S) OF DETECTIVE-CRIME STORIES PUBLISHED IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY ... Data is lacking as to how many copies were actually printed and sold; at the time of this writing [1951] only six copies are known to exist" (Queen's Quorum). During his life, Freeman never acknowledged Pitcairn as his collaborator under the name "Clifford Ashdown." The last copy to appear at auction, containing two facsimile plates, was sold at California Book Auction Galleries in 1984. Donaldson 2; Queen's Quorum 30. RARE.
