The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was the first collection of Sherlock Holmes stories published. It followed closely upon the phenomenal success of the series in the Strand Magazine: "Rarely has a character so quickly established itself on the popular imagination as did Sherlock Holmes in the latter half of 1891" (Green & Gibson). And rarely has a character proved so long-lived in that imagination, despite Doyle's threatening to kill him off as early as 1893.
