Lot Essay

The architectural background is taken from an engraving by Nicola de Bruyn after a lost work by David Vinckboons (see K. Goosens, David Vinckboons, Soest, 1977, p. 12, fig. 3). Another version, with the same background, but with differences in the figures and omitting the tree in the middle ground, is in the Louvre, Paris.
