Lot Essay
The present composition incorporates many motifs that regularly recur in Soreau's oeuvre. The same type of basket filled with grapes features in a number of his pictures, including those in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (see G. Bott, Die Stillebenmaler Soreau, Binoit, Codino und Marrell in Hanau und Frankfurt 1600-1650, Hanau, 2001, pp. 182-3, nos. WV.IS.31 and WV.IS.34). Similarly, the sliced pomegranate and the peaches on the branch on the ledge can be seen in other works such as the Still lIfe in a private collection (ibid., p. 176, no. WV.IS.14). However, the sparrow in the lower left corner appears to be unprecedented in his work and relates more closely to that of his contemporary Pieter Binoit.
