Lot Essay

Dr. Hans-Ulrich Beck, to whom we are very grateful, notes on the basis of photographs that it is possible, 'judging from the colourfulness of the picture', that the traditional reading of the date as 1640 may be erroneous, and that one of 1645 or 1649 would be more plausible (facsimile, 29 September 2001).
