Lot Essay

This is the pendant to a Portrait of Johannes Berk, aged 66, of the same dimensions, also signed and dated 1647, and with coat-of-arms, last recorded in the Galerie A. Staal, Amsterdam, 1969. The present sitter, who is identifiable from the Van Diemen coat-of-arms, was the daughter of Jacob van Diemen and Margareta van Beaumont.
The 'J' in the signature has been altered to an 'A'.

We are grateful to Dr. Alan Chong for his help in cataloguing this lot.
