We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD who has confirmed the attribution on the basis of a transparency (written communication, 18 May 2001). He suggests a dating of after 1700 and points out the rarity of such a prominent figure in this type of picture by the artist.
Jan was the son of the painter Jan Baptist Weenix, whose influence is readily apparent in his early oeuvre, which concentrates on Italianate genre scenes set in landscapes or exotic ports. After 1680, Jan turned mainly to painting still lifes of dead game and birds, for which he is best known. This genre became increasingly popular and Jan served as court painter to the Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm of Dusseldorf, for whom he painted twelve large hunting scenes for the Elector's hunting lodge, Schloss Bensberg, near Cologne.
