Verschuring went to Italy in around 1650 to complete his artistic education after spending some six years in Utrecht training under Jan Both. He spent a considerable length of time there, not returning to Holland until 1662. In his maturity he enjoyed great success as a painter of Italianate horse scenes and battles in the mould of Philips Wouwerman.

The view is taken from the foot of the Palatine Hill, with in the foreground the three columns of the Temple of the Dioscuri. Beyond are the columns of the pronaos of the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, with the church of S. Lorenzo in Miranda of 1602, and then the round Temple of Romulus, the church of SS. Cosmas and Damian and the Basilica of Constantine. The building on the right, of which the reverse of the façade can be seen, is the old church S. Maria Antiqua, which was rebuilt at the beginning of the eighteenth century as S. Maria Liberatrice.
