Lot Essay

Elements of the composition - in particular the torso and arms of the Virgin and of the dead Christ - were taken up by one of the foremost of Morazzone's followers, Isidoro Bianchi (1602-1690) in an altarpiece of The Lamentation with a Bishop Saint and Saint Charles Borromeo, a preparatory drawing for which was sold in these Rooms, 18 April 1989, lot 24.
