Lot Essay

After finishing his education with Picot in Paris, George Washington travelled to Northern Africa where he found the subject matter which would dominate his oeuvre and in which his skill flourished. In 1854 he showed his work at the Salon in Paris for the first time, for his debut he had selected an Algerian Sahara landscape. The present lot depicts a group of Arab nomads resting in an oasis. The warmth and the freshness of the colours illustrate the artist's admiration for and his obsession with the subject matter.
