Lot Essay
The tureen is decorated with two yachting scenes. On one side is a group of small one-design gaff rigged sloops participating in a regatta, probably Kiel Week, which was started by Kaiser Wilhelm II as an emulation of Cowes Week, the famous English regatta. On the other side is depicted a large racing schooner, Kaiser Wilhelm's Meteor III (1902), which was the most prized in his fleet of racing boats.
It was designed by the Americans H.G. Barber and A. Cary Smith and built by Townsend and Downey at Shooter's Island, NY. Her Christening was a black-tie event with the honors completed by Alice Roosevelt Longworth, daughter of the then President Theodore. The Vanderbilts, Morgans and Rockefellers among others were in attendance.
