The design of the present commode is based on the original model executed by Jean-Henri Riesener in 1775 and supplied to Louis XVI as a replacement for the sumptuous commode by Gaudreaux and Caffièri (supplied in 1739) in the Chambre du Roi at Versailles. The original commode is now in the Musée Condé at Chantilly.

Another example of this model commode sold Christie's East, 14 October 1999, lot 410 ($46,000).
