Lot Essay

The northern French town of Dieppe is synonymous with this type of bone and ivory-encrusted furniture, especially mirrors. The popular 'folkish' style was apparently produced in great volume at a number of small ateliers during the second half of the 19th century. The present example is typical of the local style, with it's romantically inspired Renaissance ornament, including figures and heraldic motifs

For a similarly inspired mirror, see C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, 1978, vol. II, no. 56, p. 440.
Others examples of Dieppe furniture are illustrated in C. Payne, 19th Century European Furniture, Woodbridge, 1981, p. 141. pl. 352.
