Lot Essay

The original model for the present group formed part of Carrier-Belleuse's (d. 1887) début collection at the Paris Salon in 1857. The subject is a sensitive depiction of the story of Cupid and Psyche, as recounted in the late Antique fairy tale, The Golden Ass by Lucius Auleius (2nd Century A.D.).
