Profusely inlaid throughout with geometrically arranged tesserae of wood, bone, metal and mother-of-pearl, the following three lots incorporate the decorative motif known as alla certosina, produced in Italy at the end of the 15th century. The technique, which has its origins in Mameluke Egypt, spread to Constantinople after the Ottoman conquest of Egypt in 1512, and was well received thereafter in northern Italy and Venice. Heavily influenced in the 19th century by North Africa and the Moors, the style became a familiar design on Italian furniture. These elaborately inlaid and architecturally inspired pieces are good examples of the 19th century interest in reviving the grandeur of 15th century Renaissance techniques. The ivory plaques depicting works taken from the Old Masters, are surrounded by birds and scrolling foliate decoration directly inspired by Raphael, whose similar designs can be seen at the Loggie of the Vatican. Examples of this type of furniture were shown at the Rome Exhibition of 1851. A stylistically similar bedroom suite of lesser quality, attributed to Angelo Lanata of Lavagna, was sold Christie's London, 28 October 1993, lots 224-232
