The Parisian firm of Forest is noted as having a shop at 14, rue Pierre-Picard in 1883 (see D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Mobilier Français du XIXe Siècle, Paris, 1984, p. 201). The furniture produced by Maison Forest stands out in particular for its lavishly applied fine quality ormolu mounts and, as is evident in the present lot, for the strongly contrasting colours of the marble tops used.
