Lot Essay

The marble altar relief depicting The Glory of St Luigi Gonzaga in the church of St Ignatius Loyola at Campus Martius, Rome, was executed by the French sculptor/painter, Pierre Legros (d. 1719) in 1698. The engraving on the base of the ormolu frame accompanying the present ivory relief refers to 1873, the twenty-seventh year of Pius IX's papacy and, incidentally, the same year in which Rinaldo Rinaldi died.
