A MAGNIFICENT PRIVATE COLLECTION OF FINE AND RARE WINES

Encompassing many of the globe's areas of fine wine production, this collection brings us a stream of exciting lots.

A connoisseur and wine consumer since the 1970s - it was the 1982 vintage in Bordeaux that turned him into a collector. He gradually fell in love with the wine, the regions where the vines are grown, the families that make it and the history. Through broad reading of many of wine's greatest publications of the past 30 years and extensive travel to France, Italy, Spain as well as California, he became more and more consumed by his collecting and knowledgeable of these areas' wines.

This collector has a passion for fine cuisine and wine that he shares with family and friends. In particular he is well known for his vinous contributions to "wild game dinners", and his generosity with regard to the bottles he chooses to share.

In his own words - he just kept on buying - even though he had more than he would ever drink and had begun to drink less over time. Despite this substantial offering of great depth and breadth this gentleman retains a beautiful capsule cellar representing many of the wines offered here in quantities that will allow him to continue to taste and enjoy with friends. He admits that he will still continue to buy wine, but now has a cellar that is more representative of the consumption of himself and his wife, and will fit into his impeccable home cellar.

Full dozens dominate this offering particularly strong in Bordeaux and Burgundy as well as a vast array of great California wines from recent vintages. In Bordeaux it is the great years of the 1980s that make up this imposing line up, and with all the best wines of the vintage.

It is in Burgundy that the owner's tastes come to the fore with a small number of favoured producers; DRC, Leroy and Ponsot in the reds, and Leflaive, DRC and Latour for the whites. Who can resist the full original wooden cases of the Madame Leroy's powerful 1990 reds or the full dozen of Montrachet 1989 from Domaine de la Romanée Conti.

In California we take in all the most recent successful vintages, many of the best vineyards and cuvées are represented; Shafer "Sun Spot", Diamond Creek "Lake" and Stags Leap's Cask 23 to name but a few.

This collection is so utterly complete and offers stars at every turn - Krug, Clos de Mesnil '85, the great Alsace wines of Zind-Humbrecht, Barolo from Sandrone and Scavino, Ribera del Duero's rising stars, as well as special Yquems and classic vintage ports from '63, '70 and '77.

Chosen and stored with the greatest of care and connoisseurship, this collection was catalogued and packed by Christie's Wine Department staff. The wines were removed from a temperature and humidity controlled home cellar and a professional, wine storage facility; both maintaining ideal storage conditions for fine wine.
