The composition follows that of the lost work of circa 1514/5 of which numerous copies are known, including versions in the Royal Collection, Windsor Castle, and the Alte Pinakothek, Munich (see L. Silver, The Paintings of Quentin Massys with Catalogue Raisonn/ae, Oxford, 1984, no. 19, pp. 213-4).
