Lot Essay

A pupil of Jan Both, Verschuring is best known for his elegant equestrian subjects executed in the style of Philips Wouwerman. A versatile painter, he is also known to have turned his hand to beach scenes, genre-like portraits and, rarer still, to gaurdroom interiors. For another treatment of this type of subject see the picture sold in Christie's, London, 8 December 1995, lot 222 (£17,000).
