Lot Essay

Younger brother of Louis XVI, he reigned from 1814-1824. Fleeing the Revolution as the Comte de Provence in 1791, he spent the next twenty three years on the Continent and in England intriguing against the Revolutionary Government and later, Napoleon. Restored to the Bourbon throne in 1814 he fled once again after Napoleon's return from Elba. After Waterloo he returned to Paris with the triumphant Allies. At first he was liberal with the former Revolutionaries, but towards the end of his reign, he came under the control of the reactionary ultra-royalists
