Circa 1760, Bordeaux
The upper section with a broad moulded cornice above a pair of glazed doors with moulded edges and scroll carved internal mouldings, enclosing shelves and flanked by narrow panelled angles and panelled sides, with two small drawers flanking a central carved cartouche; the base with a pair of panelled drawers above twin cupboards with quatrefoil scroll carved panels, the sinuous apron flanked by a pair of short scrolled feet

Lot Essay

The use of mahogany is rare in mid-18th century French furniture and the coastal ports of La Rochelle, Saint Malo, Bordeaux, Nantes and others were known for their 'meubles de port', or furniture made from the various types of mahogany imported from French possessions in Guadeloupe, Martinique, San Domingo, Cayenne and the South American mainland. Such furniture was usually specially commissioned by the local bourgeoisie, bankers and successful merchants and exhibited local characteristics, forms and hardware typical of the towns in which they were made
