Lot Essay

The vendor, Ivan Benson, and George Harrison shared a mutual acquaintance in Terry Gustafson who attended the Maharishi's academy at the same time as The Beatles. At the time, Benson was a teenager in a band, and an avid Beatle fan, when Gustfason told Harrison about his young friend, Harrison recommended that he invest in a sitar, which due to Harrison's popularisation of the instrument, retailed in the States for several hundred dollars. Harrison offered to send one to him from India if he could provide the necessary $100, unfortunately Benson didn't have sufficient funds and suggested jokingly in a letter to Harrison that he could send it to him for free.
