Of all the countries in Asia, it is perhaps Burma that has the most valuable gem deposits. Not only are rubies and sapphires found here, but also spinels, peridots and jadeite. So unique are the quality elements exhibited by the best of Burmese stones, that it has emerged as the standard by which other gems are judged. Thus it is not surprising that throughout its history, Burma has been coveted for its mineral riches. In the 18th Century, China invaded the northern border and subsequently, the English colonized the country in an attempt to exploit the rubies.
In the modern period, Burma once only offered its mineral rubies through twice yearly auctions which would be regularly attended by the most important gem dealers from around the world. In recent years, with increased liberalisation of the economy, it is now possible to buy the stones closer to the source. Unfortunately, even with increasing systematic and more highly mechanical exploitation, the supply of stones continues to diminish, thus making many of the superb stones seen today even more highly prized.
The star ruby has emerged as one of the most fascinating examples of nature's alchemy in the gem kingdom. The unique star effect is generated by the presence of rutile, a mineral which methodically arranges itself in fine needle-like crystals within the stone. When cut in cabochon, these needles produce a luminous star effect as a point of light reflects the gem.
It is exceedingly difficult to find any fine gem stone greater than ten carats, it is rarer still to find the star ruby offered here which is not only in excess of twenty-five carats, but is also of exceptional colour exhibiting an impressive star. This combination contributes greatly to this stone's rarity and desirability.
