Further details
Natural green colour in diamonds is, after red, the rarest of all hues. It is quite usual to have a secondary colour which in this case is yellow, due to nitrogen. The green colour is caused by exposure of the diamond crystal to natural irradiation whilst it is still in the earth. High energy particles penetrate the stone's lattice, producing defects that act as colour absorbing centres which generate a green hue in the diamond. In only rare instances does this phenomenon occur. Of all the "named" diamonds, the most famous green diamond is the "Dresden Green" weighing 40.70 carats

In recent years, a few green diamonds have come onto the market causing a great deal of excitement. In October 1999, a fancy deep yellow-green diamond weighing 5.12 carats, which is also the biggest green diamond ever to have appeared at Christie's, sold for US$1,102,500. In April 2000, a fancy vivid yellowish green diamond weighing 1.73 carats sold at Christie's for US$886,000 or US$512,000 per carat, making it the highest price per carat for a green diamond sold at Christie's
