Lot Essay

For a discussion of further plates from this service, see Ilse Baer in Das Flora Danica-Service (Copenhagen 1999), pp. 252-260. This plate is from an unidentified botanical service produced at the same time as the famous Château de la Malmaison service supplied to the Empress Joséphine. The frequent use of the same graphic sources as the Malmaison service has led to much mis-attribution.

The source for this plate, printed above, is Étienne Pierre Ventenat's botanical illustration for Jardin de la Malmaison (Paris 1803), pl. XXIX.
