Lot Essay

After the original theatre on the site, designed by Carl Gottard Langhans, burnt down in 1817, Schinkel was commissioned to build a new theatre. The Schauspielhaus was built between 1818 and 1821. The graphic source for this cup is almost certainly the engraving by Carl Friedrich Thiele after Schinkel of the theatre as seen from the North-East.
