Lot Essay

The mirror's 'picturesque' cresting comprises a Chinese-railed and rustic-pillared kiosk, with rustic pillars and pagoda-swept roof set above a waterfall, that derives from a mirror pattern in Thomas Johnson's, Collection of Designs, 1758 (pl. 9). The latter kiosk, inhabited by a fan-bearing Chinese courtier, inspired the design of a related frame for a tripartite 'landscape' or overmantel mirror sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 6 July 1989, lot 20.
