Lot Essay

The games-table has a marble chess-board incorporating beautifully figured tablets of Derbyshire bluejohn, while its pillar and scrolled 'claw' are richly carved with florid Roman foliage in the George IV antique manner popularised by Thomas King's, The Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified, 1829 (E. Joy, Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design, Woodbridge, 1977, p. 506).
