Lot Essay

This fine mahogany deep-lidded chest on arched bracket feet corresponds to a 'Cloths Press' pattern in Thomas Chippendale'’s, The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker'’s Director, 1754 (pl. XCV1). A related chest, likewise enriched with a sunk reed border, was sold by the Earl of Shaftesbury, St. Giles'’s House, Dorset, in these Rooms, 26 June 1980, lor 70.
