Lot Essay

The chairs have Chinese latticed backs relating to a 'Chinese Double Brac'd Paleing' pattern in W. Halfpenny's, Twenty New Designs of Chinese Lattice, 1750 (pl. 2). The chair-maker Robert Manwaring in his Designs for Chinese Chairs, 1765 (pl. 10) included a railed back chair with this pattern of arched crest-rail. The same fretted rail pattern appeared on a square back armchair sold Christie's South Kensington, 15 March 1995, lot 379.
