A related bureau-cabinet with similar arrangement of drawers and handles to the lower section was exhibited by M. Turpin and illustrated in Connoisseur, June 1969 [trade advertisement]. The same drawer arrangement for the lower section and related design for the upper section of the present piece, corresponds to bureau-cabinet drawings executed in the 1720s by craftsmen sent to train in London by Peter the Great (F. Martynov, 'A Russian Master Cabinet Maker', Furniture History, 1994, p. 95, figs. 1-2). A closely related walnut bureau-cabinet bearing the inscription 'Will Palleday at the Crown in Aldermanbury - Cabinet Maker', was in the possession of Pelham Galleries and is illustrated in C. Gilbert, The Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, Leeds, 1996, p. 361, fig. 704.
A similar bureau-cabinet, but with slightly taller upper section and attributed to the Strand cabinet-maker, Peter Miller, was sold by Sir Thomas Beevor, Bt., in these Rooms, 14 June 2001, lot 150 (£157,750).
