Lot Essay

The neo-classical movement was embraced as soon as the first French pieces of furniture were imported to Holland in the early 1770's. With its straight lines and surfaces as well as such classical ornamentation as Vitruvian scrolls or ribbon-tied wreath and swags this cabinet is typical of the Louis XVI style.

A closely related cabinet is illustrated in S. Stodel Antiquités, The Splendour of the Dutch Interior 1600-1800, Amsterdam, 2000, cat. 16.
