The upper surface of the cover carved in shallow relief with a rectangular panel reserving the inscription, Yuzhi Bishu Shanzhuang Baiyun, 'By Imperial Command, the Palace for the Retreat from Summer Heat: One Hundred Rhyme', surrounded by the Eight Buddhist Emblems, bajixiang, interspersed with lotus flower-heads within a raised border, the sides and base undecorated

A comparable storage box with the same reference to Bishu Shanzhuang, the Imperial Summer retreat situated in Jehol, constructed of zitan, was sold in these Rooms, 29 April 2001, lot 539. Related gilt-lacquer boxes decorated with the Eight Buddhist Emblems are published: the first from the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Zhongguo Qiqi Quanji, Qing dynasty, vol. 6, no. 157, inscribed with Yuzhi Bishu Shanzhuang Houxu, 'By Imperial Command, The Latter Preface of Bishu Shanzhuang'; the other, illustrated in Zhongguo Gudai Qiqi, no. 86, is inscribed with Yuzhi Bishu Shanzhuang Baiyun, the same text as on the present box.
