Lot Essay

The arms have been thought to be those of Leopold II, Duke of Anhalt, but more recently the arms have been identified as those of Christian Auguste (1690-1747) and his wife, Johanna Elizabeth (1712-60), daughter of Duke Christian Auguste of Holstein-Gottorp. Pieces from this rare service are illustrated by M. Beurdeley, Porcelain of the East India Companies, 1962, fig.80, p.110; and by J. G. Phillips, China Trade Porcelain, 1960, pls. 27 and 28; and by 'The Chinese Porcelain Company', Important Chinese Export Porcelain from Kangxi to Jiaqing, New York, 1999, p 54 and 55.
