[John Washington (1800-1863, editor)]
Eskimaux and English Vocabulary, for the use of the Arctic Expeditions. Published by order of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty. London: Harrison & Son for John Murray, 1850. Small oblong 8° (102 x 165mm). Original dark blue diaper-grained leather over thin boards, the upper cover blocked in gilt 'Eskimaux Vocabulary', the lower in blind with a fouled anchor (worn, upper cover detached), contained within modern felt-lined black cloth box, titled in gilt on red morocco labels on upper cover and 'spine'. Provenance: Frank Wilbert Stokes (1858-1955, presentation inscription to:); Samuel J. Entriken (inscription 'Nov.9.1895./Samuel J. Entrikin[sic.]/from his friend F.W. Stokes', exhibition label noting that the work was presented by Entriken to an unnamed institution in 1927).
A very rare work, with an evocative provenance, by a founder member of and Secretary to the Royal Geographical Society. 'The following Vocabulary is compiled for the use of the Arctic Expeditions fitted out at the expense of the British Government to carry relief to Sir John Franklin and his companions. It was begun specially with a view to the Behring Strait Expedition, as we learn from the accounts of Cook, Kotzbue, and Beechey, that much intercourse took place during those voyages with the natives of north-western coast of North America. It may also prove useful to the expedition about to sail for Lancaster Sound'. John Washington, now remembered chiefly as a hydrographer, had served for over three years on the North American Station. He is also recalled as a linguist of some ability and served as secretary of the Royal Geographical Society from 1836 to 1841. 'As secretary, with the assistance of one clerk, he did the whole work of the society, the success of which in its early days was largely due to his energy and devotion' (DNB). This copy belonged to the American artist Frank Wilbert Stokes. Stokes took part in the Peary Relief Expedition to Greenland in 1892 and Peary's North Greenland Expedition of 1893 and 1894. He then turned his attention to the South joining Nordenskjöld's Swedish Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1902.
