Lot Essay

A portfolio of photographs by expedition astronomer and photographer Richard Basso which records the Austrian-Hungarian contribution to the International Polar Year 1882-83. The expedition, delivered by the Pola to Jan Mayen in July 1882, wintered over and carried out scientific, meteorological and magnetic observations and a topographical survey of Arctic islands lying between the north of Norway and Greenland.
