George Francis Arthur MULOCK(1882-1963)
The Charts of the "Discovery" Antarctic Expedition. London: The Royal Geographical Society and Edward Stanford, 1908. 8° (247 x 157mm). 8pp. explanatory pamphlet. 5 folding coloured lithographic maps after George Mulock, the maps loose as issued, in original blue cloth slip-case, titled in gilt on spine and upper cover (light scuffing, cloth ties lacking), text in original cloth wrappers mounted on front pastedown. Provenance: Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912);and thence by descent to his grandson, Falcon Scott; his sale Christie's, 17 September 1999, lot 222).
Scott's copy of the charts which represent the geographical achievements of his first expedition. The charts were compiled by Mulock, a Royal Navy sub-Lieutenant from the Morning, who replaced Shackleton when he was invalided home. Mulock 'was then only twenty-one years of age, but having received some excellent instruction as a surveyor in H.M.S. Triton, and having a natural bent for this work, his services proved invaluable'.
