Lot Essay

The Crawford Municipal School of Art dated this painting 1892, and praised its modern candour and bold composition. It was in 1892 that O'Reilly returned from a two year period of study in Paris, and was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy. His death the following year cut short a career notable for its early achievements. Born to humble parentage in Dublin, O'Reilly had quickly established himself as a success at the Royal Hiberian Academy School. He carried off numerous prizes between 1884-1890, including a silver and bronze medal in 1885 and the Albert Prize in 1887 for a subject picture exhibited that year. He was befriended and encouraged by fellow artist Walter Osborne, who was much influenced by French painting and persuaded O'Reilly to visit Paris.
