Album of approximately 600 photographs. 1855-90s. Various processes, including albumen, gelatin silver developing-out paper, printing-out paper and platinum. Varying formats from gem, 1 x ¾in. (2.5 x 1.8cm.) to cabinet card, 7 5/8 x 6in. (19.3 x 15.2cm.); the largest, 8 3/8 x 6½in. (21.3 x 16.5cm.) A few signed and/or dated in the negative or on the recto; the cartes-de-visite/cabinet cards with occasional credit in the margin; the majority titled and/or dated in pencil or ink on the mount. A few with autographs on the recto or on the mount. The majority of pages hand-coloured. Blue leather, gilt, g.e.

Lot Essay

Much of this extensive collection dates from the late 1850s to early 1870s. Royal portraits include Napoleon III, Empress Eugénie, Queen Victoria and her children, including Edward, Prince of Wales. Landed families include Devonshire, Montagu, Cavendish and Spencer. Also includes one albumen print, dated 1876, and a later platinum print of the Prince of Wales's first tiger by Bourne & Shepherd.
