Album of 42 salt prints and one albumen print. 1840s-early 50s. Varying sizes from 2 3/8 x 1¾in. (6 x 4.5cm.) to 4 x 3 1/8in. (10.1 x 7.9cm.) or the reverse. One titled in pencil on the verso; 17 initialled M.D. and 36 titled in ink on the mount. 9 trimmed oval, one with arched top and 29 with clipped corners. Each mounted one-per-page on coloured paper; the albumen print loosely inserted. Inscribed Susan M... Franklen - Clemenstone in ink on front free endpaper. Dark blue leather, gilt, g.e.

Lot Essay

Varied subjects include 3 views of the Llewelyn country home at Penllergare, 13 portraits, 2 outdoor scenes, 18 still-life subjects with flowers and 6 fowl studies. Penllergare images include the conservatory, as well as the observatory, for which John Dillwyn Llewelyn's daughter Thereza Mary laid the foundation stone in 1846. Family portraits include young William Mansel Llewelyn and his sisters Elinor Amy, Lucy and Emma Charlotte Llewelyn, as well as Thereza Mary. Other portraits include Graham, Hussey and Ernest Vivian, Dulcie and Caroline Eden and Cathinka Smith. Also includes two outdoor scenes of family members making a snowman. Mary Dillwyn was the youngest sister of John Dillwyn Llewelyn who married Emma Thomasina Talbot, a first cousin of William Henry Fox Talbot. Along with her brother, sister-in-law and niece Thereza Mary, Mary Dillwyn took an active interest in photography.
